Mahama pushes for African-owned peace financing at AU Extraordinary Summit in Luanda

Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to an African-owned approach to conflict prevention and resolution, advocating for sustainable financing for African-led peace support operations.

Speaking at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Luanda, Angola, President Mahama endorsed the Luanda Action Plan and the African Union Trigger Model, calling for greater African ownership of the continent’s peace and security agenda.

“Ghana attaches particular importance to sustainable, predictable, and African-owned financing of our peace and security agenda. Our task must ensure effective implementation, better coordination, and shared responsibility.”

The Luanda Action Plan, which is at the centre of the extraordinary session, seeks to reform the AU’s peace and security architecture to enable rapid response to coups, insurgencies, and protracted conflicts across the continent, while reducing over-reliance on external partners.

President Mahama also touched on the issue of reparations and restitution of cultural heritage, welcoming steps taken by some countries to address historical injustices.

“Many countries have started to address the issue of reparations and are returning looted artefacts. We encourage continued international engagement ahead of the 81st UN General Assembly session.”

The Extraordinary Session in Luanda has brought together African Heads of State to deliberate on sustainable solutions to peace and security challenges confronting the continent.
