Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is expected to formally assume office as Chief Justice on Monday, November 17, 2025, when President John Dramani Mahama administers the oath of office at a ceremony in Accra.
His elevation follows Parliament’s approval of his nomination on November 13, during which the House endorsed him with 163 votes, while 69 members voted against.
President Mahama put forward Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s name on September 23, 2025, citing his long-standing contribution to the judiciary and the breadth of experience he has gained from serving at various levels of the court structure.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has been overseeing the functions of the Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, after Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo was suspended and later relieved of her post.
At his vetting on November 10 before the Appointments Committee, he outlined his vision for a more transparent and responsive Judiciary, pledging to work with all stakeholders to strengthen confidence in the justice system and expand avenues for timely and accessible legal services.
Today’s swearing-in will officially confirm him as the nation’s substantive Chief Justice.
