The Electoral Commission’s recent release of the presidential ballot positions has sparked concern among National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters. John Mahama, the party’s flagbearer, has been placed eighth out of 13 candidates, a position that could prove detrimental to his chances of winning.
Experts warn that this placement may lead to voter fatigue or oversight, as voters scan the lengthy ballot paper ¹. The “primacy effect” also comes into play, where candidates at the top of the ballot tend to receive more votes due to their prominent positioning.
Mahama’s middle child syndrome, being sandwiched between multiple candidates, further compounds the issue. His name may not resonate as strongly with voters, particularly undecided ones.
To overcome these challenges, the NDC must intensify its campaign efforts:
Amplify Mahama’s Message
Highlight his vision, policies, and track record to differentiate him from opponents.
Mobilize Grassroot Suppor Engage voters, particularly in stronghold regions, to create a loyal and dedicated base.
Leverage Social Media
Utilize online platforms to reach a wider audience and build momentum.
The NDC’s 2016 electoral defeat serves as a reminder of the importance of strategic campaigning ². By acknowledging the potential risks associated with Mahama’s ballot position and proactively addressing them, the party can increase their chances of success.
As an NDC activist, I urge our supporters to remain vigilant and adapt our strategy to overcome this hidden danger. Together, we can ensure Mahama’s message resonates with voters and secures victory in the upcoming election.
