Former Deputy Minister of Communication and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has argued that the pledge by the party’s flagbearer, John Mahama to cover fees for level 100 tertiary students is feasible and necessary.
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Felix Kwakye Ofosu emphasized the need for this policy due to the high number of students unable to enroll in tertiary education because of admission fees.
“It is a well-structured, well-thought-out plan,” he said.
“And this is being done in the midst of unprecedented economic hardship, the kind of hardship that has never before happened in our history,” he added.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu highlighted the economic challenges faced by Ghanaians, stating, “A quarter of our population has gone without food, so a population that has gone without food on its table will be hard-pressed to cough up between 2,000 and 4,000 as university fees.”
He further justified the policy, saying, “Even if we were to consider the economic situation inflicted on Ghanaians by Bawumia’s hopelessness as the head of the economic management team, then this is more than justified.”
Furthermore, Kwakye Ofosu assured that the tuition-free plan will be implemented alongside other interventions aimed at making higher education accessible to all, particularly for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Former President John Mahama announced the policy during the NDC’s youth manifesto launch, promising to absorb the fees of level 100 students in public universities, effective from the 2025/2026 academic year.
