The Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has written to the Speaker of Parliament, requesting an emergency recall of the House to consider outstanding public business.
In a memo dated November 22, 2024, Afenyo Markin said the Sixth Meeting of the Fourth Session of Parliament, which was scheduled to take place on November 7, 2024, adjourned without addressing any government business.
Afenyo-Markin listed several urgent matters that require the attention of Parliament, including a request for tax exemptions under the One District, One Factory Programme, and the consideration of the president’s nominations for appointment as Justices of the Supreme Court.
Other pressing issues include the ratification of mining lease agreements and the passage of several bills, such as the Environmental Protection Agency Bill, 2024, and the Free Secondary Education Bill, 2024.
“I submit that reconvening Parliament at this juncture would send a powerful message of national unity and institutional stability,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
“It would demonstrate that, even as we approach the peak of the electoral season, Parliament remains steadfast in its constitutional duties and committed to advancing the national interest through bipartisan cooperation,” he added.
The Majority Leader proposed Thursday, November 28, 2024, and Friday, November 29, 2024, as the scheduled dates for the emergency recall, allowing Members to return to their constituencies over the weekend to continue their campaign towards the December 7 general elections.
Afenyo-Markin emphasized that the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on Article 97 (1) (g) and (h) provides a clean slate for Parliament to move forward in unity and purpose.
