The Majority Women Caucus in Parliament has denounced comments made by NDC’s Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary candidate, John Dumelo, suggesting that his opponent, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, was involved in her husband’s death.
At a press conference, Deputy Majority Leader Patricia Appiah-Agyei described Dumelo’s remarks as “malicious” and “disrespectful” to women.
She encouraged Lydia Alhassan to take legal action against her accuser.
Meanwhile, John Dumelo, has apologized and retracted his previous comments regarding the death of Lydia Alhassan’s husband.
In a post on social media sighted by Metro TV, Dumelo wrote that, “I apologize and unreservedly retract my previous comments… My comments were in response to personal attacks by supporters of the honorable minister, including false allegations regarding my mother’s death.”
“However, I recognize that my reaction was inappropriate,” he added.
John Dumelo extended his “sincere and unconditional apologies” to Lydia Alhassan, saying his statements did not reflect his values.
Lydia Alhassan’s husband, Emmanuel Kyerematen Agyarko, was the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency until his demise in 2020.
