Mamponghene condemns NDC office chaos, warns against tribal politics

The Paramount Chief of Mampong, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, has issued a strong condemnation of the recent violent incident at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) office in Mampong, urging political actors to exercise restraint and uphold the values of unity and mutual respect.

Supporters of the ruling NDC took to the streets in protest over the nomination of a Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), accusing party leadership of sidelining local preferences. The protest, which lasted two days, escalated into confrontations that disrupted public peace and drew sharp criticism from traditional authorities.

During a meeting with the NDC leadership, the Mamponghene expressed his disappointment and described the altercation as “unfortunate and saddening,” warning that such incidents risk undermining the social cohesion of Mampong and the wider Asanteman.

“Mampong and Asanteman do not belong to any political party. We are all Ghanaians,” Daasebre declared. “I don’t want what happened at the party office to happen again.”

He further addressed the disturbing use of tribal language during the protests, issuing a stern warning to those seeking to inflame ethnic tensions for political gain.

“To all those who spewed those tribal sentiments, I want this reversed. I don’t want any tribal war in Mampong,” he cautioned.

The chief emphasized that his respect for both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) remains unwavering, and he expects political leaders to match that respect with maturity and responsible conduct.

“I hear you have been summoned, and all arrangements have been made. Do the needful or face my wrath,” the Mamponghene said, addressing NDC executives directly. “If you are an executive, show leadership. The party does not belong to you—it belongs to all of us.”

In response, NDC leadership present at the meeting assured the chief of their commitment to de-escalating the situation and resolving internal disagreements through dialogue and party structures. They pledged to take immediate steps to calm tensions and engage with local stakeholders.

The incident has sparked broader calls for political actors in the region to prioritize peace, avoid divisive rhetoric, and respect traditional authority as Ghana moves toward future elections.
