The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA) has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in Bawku and its surrounding areas.
Addressing the media, MAYA highlighted the escalating violence and banditry, particularly by Kusasi youth, which has resulted in loss of life, destruction of property, and disruption of economic activities.
The association strongly condemned the Kusasi youth’s actions, describing them as “domestic terrorism” and “banditry.”
The group cited the tragic killing of a six-month-old baby and the attack on police installations, including the burning down of the residence of the Divisional Police Commander.
MAYA called on the government and security agencies to ensure that perpetrators of these dastardly acts face the full force of the law.
“We urge the Police and all security agencies to heed this clear directive from the President and ensure that the perpetrators of all these dastardly acts face the full force of the law,” MAYA stated.
The association rejected the demand by Kusasi groups for the arrest of Bawku Naba, Naa Sheriga Alhaji Seidu Abagre, describing it as “unfounded, illegal, and a deliberate attempt to incite further unrest.”
The group emphasized that Naa Sheriga is the duly enskinned Chief of Bawku by the Nayiri, the legitimate kingmaker.
MAYA demanded the immediate resumption of armed escorts on the Bawku-Bolgatanga highway to restore the free movement of people and goods.
MAYA also urged the government to remain impartial in the Bawku chieftaincy conflict and allow the ongoing mediation led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to proceed without external interference.
The association criticized the Inspector General of Police’s conduct during his visit to Bawku, where he apologized to the Kusasi youth for the police’s actions.
The group described the apology as a “grave error in judgment” that emboldened the Kusasi youth to perpetuate more crime.
“The IGP must step aside to cleanse the image of the service he has so soiled to assure these young officers that their lives matter,” MAYA stated.
