Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim believes missing out on European football this season will benefit his team, giving them crucial time to develop without midweek distractions.
Following a 15th-place Premier League finish and Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, United are out of Europe for only the second time since 1990. This means an early start to their Carabao Cup campaign, with a second-round trip to League Two side Grimsby on Wednesday—their first meeting since 1948.
“We were not prepared to play in Europe and the Premier League,” Amorim admitted. “We need time to develop as a team.”
Squad rotation is expected, with England duo Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire, along with Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee, pushing for game time. Keeper Andre Onana and young talents Ayden Heaven and Tyler Fredricson may also feature.
Noussair Mazraoui remains sidelined, and Rasmus Hojlund is unlikely to play amid loan talks with Napoli. Amorim also hopes to offload several players, including Antony, Sancho, Garnacho, and Malacia.
With only one point from their first two league games, Amorim views the Carabao Cup as a route back into Europe—United’s clear goal for the season.
“We need time to build a base. But eventually, we’ll need Europe so everyone gets games,” he said.
