A delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is expected to conclude its sixth review of Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme on Friday, May 15, 2026, as government pushes to secure the final tranche of financial support under the programme.
The IMF mission team, led by Ruben Atoyan, has been in the country since April 29 engaging government officials, financial sector players and other stakeholders on Ghana’s economic performance and reform agenda.
Sources close to the discussions indicate that engagements between the government and the IMF have so far progressed smoothly, although concerns remain within the energy sector, particularly over financing challenges, restructuring efforts and persistent fiscal pressures.
The review is expected to assess Ghana’s performance since the fifth review earlier this year and determine whether delayed policy targets and structural reforms have been fully implemented or are nearing completion.
Particular attention is expected to be placed on the energy sector, where the IMF is keen on reforms aimed at improving operational efficiency, debt sustainability and financial management.
Discussions are also expected to focus on government expenditure and allocations to key sectors, especially social protection programmes targeted at cushioning vulnerable groups amid ongoing economic adjustments.
In the banking sector, the IMF is said to be satisfied with measures taken to address challenges involving banks with significant government ownership. However, some outstanding concerns involving private commercial banks are expected to be resolved within the shortest possible time.
The sixth review will further examine prior actions required under the programme and determine whether Ghana has met the necessary conditions to access the final disbursement under the IMF-supported arrangement.
The IMF delegation is also expected to receive updates on efforts being made to address longstanding vulnerabilities within the country’s financial sector.
