Media General has lodged an official complaint with the Ghana Police Service against Alhaji Osman Masawudu, Third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), over threats of assault.
The incident stems from a recent press conference where Masawudu allegedly pushed down a TV3 microphone.
In a subsequent interview in Kumasi, he threatened physical assault against Media General journalists attending future NPP events.
“These statements and actions constitute an attack not only on Media General but on the constitutional right to press freedom and the safety of all journalists across the country,” Media General stated.
The company is urging a full investigation and action against Masawudu to ensure journalist safety.
“Media General remains committed to upholding the highest standards of journalism and will not be intimidated or deterred in its pursuit of truth and the public’s right to information,” the statement added.
Media General is calling on stakeholders, including civil society organizations and the Ghana Journalists Association, to defend media freedom and journalist safety.
This is not the first time the NPP has meted such an unfair treatment towards Media General. In December 2024, during a press conference at the party’s headquarters, a TV3 reporter was ejected, while accusing the media house of leaning towards the National Democratic Congress.
