Korle-Bu Leadership Crisis: Medical Lab Union Issues Emergency Order

The Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU), Korle-Bu Chapter, has issued an emergency directive to its members following what it describes as an “unlawful and unilateral” leadership change at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).

In a statement dated 5th May 2026 and signed by the Chapter Chairman, John Kofi Nakoja, the union alleges that management of KBTH has removed the duly appointed Head of the Central Laboratory Department, a Medical Laboratory Scientist, and replaced the position with the Director of Medical Affairs, a physician.

According to the union, the decision contradicts previously agreed arrangements reached with the Ministry of Health and acknowledged by the National Labour Commission. It argues that the move represents a breach of administrative protocols and undermines established professional governance structures within the hospital.

Describing the action as a violation of good faith, MELPWU insisted that the development threatens the integrity of laboratory practice and professional autonomy at the facility.

As a result, the union has directed all members to remain on high alert and strictly adhere only to official union instructions. It further instructed members not to recognise or cooperate with any leadership structure outside the agreed framework.

The directive also signals a possible escalation, with the union warning members to prepare for the potential activation of industrial action if the issue is not resolved.

“We will not allow the erosion of our profession through administrative manipulation,” the statement emphasized, urging unity and discipline among members while cautioning that “an injury to one is an injury to all.”

The situation at KBTH has raised concerns over possible disruptions to laboratory services should tensions between management and the union escalate further, as stakeholders await intervention from relevant authorities to resolve the dispute.
