In Pictures: The Men Behind Otumfuo’s Famous “Ziom/Wiom” Sound

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is often accompanied by a powerful and symbolic sound whenever he speaks publicly — “Ziom” or “Wiom.”

That famous response comes from the Asantehene’s trusted traditional spokespersons, known as the Akyeame (Linguists), who play a vital role in the Ashanti Kingdom’s royal communication system.

During Otumfuo’s appearance at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) last Friday, eight of the Asantehene’s linguists were present and captured in a striking photo standing in order of seniority from right to left.

Among the respected traditional figures captured in the photo were:

  • Nsuase Poku III — Chief Linguist (Akyeamehene)
  • Jachie Amoateng — who also serves as Chief of Bosomtwe Jachie, making his role unique
  • Kyeame Kentenkrekyi — currently the main spokesperson of the Asantehene
  • Kyeame Bonsu
  • Kyeame Antwi Boasiako

According to the post, Otumfuo has a total of 12 Akyeame, with eight accompanying him during the UPSA engagement.

The Role of the Akyeame

The Akyeame serve as official traditional spokespersons for the Asantehene and are deeply respected within the Ashanti Kingdom.

Their responsibilities include interpreting royal messages, speaking on behalf of the king during ceremonies, and preserving traditional communication protocols.

The famous “Ziom/Wiom” chant has become one of the most recognizable sounds associated with the Asantehene’s public appearances and royal authority.
