The countdown is over. The world’s biggest football spectacle is here, and Ghanaian fans will have front-row access as Metro TV and Original TV prepare to broadcast selected matches from the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The two stations, under Ignite Media Group, have officially joined Ghana’s national broadcast consortium for the tournament, securing the rights to air selected matches live throughout the month-long football festival.
The announcement follows confirmation by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) that it has secured the exclusive terrestrial Free-to-Air rights for the tournament through the support of the Government of Ghana, ensuring millions of Ghanaians can follow every twist and turn of the World Cup journey without subscription barriers.
For football lovers across the country, the arrangement means the drama, passion and unforgettable moments of the FIFA World Cup will be delivered directly into homes, workplaces and gathering spots nationwide.
Bringing the World Cup home
Metro TV and Original TV say viewers can expect far more than just live matches.
The stations are promising comprehensive tournament coverage, featuring expert analysis, tactical breakdowns, exclusive features and engaging studio discussions designed to enrich the viewing experience.
Adding a unique dimension to the coverage, teams from Ignite Media Group will be stationed across the three host countries, the United States, Mexico and Canada, providing first-hand reports and bringing audiences closer to the atmosphere surrounding the tournament.
Former footballers, coaches and respected pundits are expected to headline special programmes before and after major fixtures, offering insights into the teams, tactics and personalities shaping the competition.
A tournament filled with blockbuster clashes
The 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway on Thursday, June 11, with co-hosts Mexico facing South Africa in a symbolic opening fixture that revives memories of the 2010 World Cup opener in Johannesburg.
Football fans will also be treated to an early heavyweight schedule featuring the United States against Paraguay, while several eye-catching encounters involving African nations are expected to command significant attention.
Among the standout fixtures are Brazil against Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire versus Ecuador, Spain against Cape Verde, and France against Senegal, a fixture that rekindles memories of Senegal’s famous victory over the French in the 2002 World Cup.
For Ghanaian supporters, however, all eyes will be on the Black Stars as they begin their quest for glory against Panama before taking on England and Croatia in what promises to be a fiercely contested group campaign.
Spotlight on Africa
Recognising the growing influence of African football on the global stage, Metro TV and Original TV will dedicate special segments to the continent’s representatives.
Viewers can expect feature stories, player profiles and in-depth discussions examining Africa’s chances of making a deep run in the tournament.
Radio coverage for fans on the move
The World Cup experience will not be limited to television.
Original 91.9 FM will deliver live radio commentary, ensuring fans travelling, working or unable to watch can still follow every goal, save and dramatic moment as it unfolds.
The station says listeners can expect detailed play-by-play coverage and expert match analysis throughout the competition.
Rights protection warning
Meanwhile, GBC has cautioned individuals and organisations against unauthorised use of World Cup content.
The broadcaster says unauthorised transmission, rebroadcasting, streaming, public exhibition or commercial distribution of tournament content remains prohibited under the rights agreement.
According to GBC, the Ghana TV Consortium will actively monitor traditional and digital platforms throughout the tournament, with infringements expected to attract legal and regulatory sanctions.
Football’s grandest stage
Widely regarded as the most-watched sporting event on the planet, the FIFA World Cup 2026 will captivate billions of viewers worldwide.
