Metro TV retracts report and apologises to UDS professor

Metro TV Ghana has withdrawn a report published on 14 April 2026 about the selection process for a new Vice Chancellor at the University for Development Studies and issued a public apology to Professor Paul Kwame Nkegbe.

The broadcaster said the decision followed concerns raised about the accuracy of the story, which linked Professor Nkegbe to alleged disruptions during a university council meeting convened to appoint a Vice Chancellor.

In a rejoinder also dated 14 April 2026, Professor Nkegbe, who is Dean of the Graduate School at the university, strongly denied any involvement in the incident described in the report.

The original publication had alleged that a group of about 15 men forced their way into a council meeting and demanded that the process be reserved for a candidate from a specific ethnic group or halted entirely. It also suggested that ethnic considerations had influenced tensions around the meeting. These claims were not independently verified at the time.

Professor Nkegbe described the allegations as entirely false and a fabrication. He rejected any suggestion that he was connected to the disruption and criticised the use of his name and image in the report, saying it had damaged his reputation and exposed him to unnecessary public attention and potential security concerns.

He said the report was a reckless distortion of facts and demanded a full retraction, removal of all related content, and a public apology with the same prominence as the original publication. He also warned that failure to comply would leave him with no option but to take legal action to protect his reputation.

Metro TV has since apologised and withdrawn the story following the rejoinder. The broadcaster said it was correcting the record after concerns were raised about the accuracy of its initial report.

It remains unclear when the university council will reconvene to continue the Vice Chancellor selection process.
