Astute Sports journalist Michael Kofi Oduro has heaped praise on Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), and several key government figures for their key roles in the successful organization of the recent President’s Cup.
The annual football fixture, this time featuring Ghana’s most decorated football giants, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak drew an electric crowd and saw the presence of numerous high-profile dignitaries, including His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama.
The game saw Asante Kotoko come from a goal down to claim a 2-1 victory. Hamza Issah capitalized on an error by goalkeeper Mohammed Camara to give Hearts of Oak the lead, but Kotoko turned the tide with an own goal and a finish from Kwame Poku, securing their 9th President’s Cup title.
Speaking after the event, Michael Kofi Oduro in a conversation on Original FM/TV reflected on the symbolic importance of July 1st, Republic Day, and lauded the Presidency for honoring it in a way that united Ghanaians beyond politics and football.
“We must applaud the Presidency for recognizing the importance of July 1st, Republic Day, as the second most important day in Ghana’s history after Independence Day on March 6. Associating this national holiday with the President’s Cup, and ensuring the active involvement of the President himself, shows deep respect for our democratic journey.”
The host of Metro TV Morning Sports show singled out Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, describing him as the quiet force driving things behind the scenes.
“A special mention goes to Julius Debrah for his exceptional leadership. Most of the coordination and logistics at the Presidency fall under his supervision, and the seamless execution of this event speaks volumes about his commitment and competence. He truly deserves every bit of the credit.”
Michael Oduro praised Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah for the excellent security that kept the event peaceful and well-coordinated. He also commended GHALCA, regional leaders, and all stakeholders whose support contributed to the success of the occasion.
“We must acknowledge the contributions of the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley, and the Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakene. Their efforts, alongside other dignitaries, helped create buzz around the match and ensured that it lived up to expectations.”
Just like Oliver Twist who always asked for more, Michael Oduro expressed hope that this won’t be the last time the government takes an active role in football. He called for consistent and greater participation in future sporting events.
