A devastating fire broke out late last night at Mallam Atta Market, one of Accra’s busiest commercial hubs. The inferno, which started around midnight, caused chaos in the congested market area, forcing traders and nearby residents to scramble to safety.
Witnesses reported thick, black smoke rising from the market, which quickly spread through the densely packed stalls. As the flames consumed wooden structures and merchandise, local fire departments were immediately called into action.
Three fire tenders from the National Headquarters, Flagstaff House, and Circle Fire Stations were dispatched to the scene, but the narrow alleys and dense stall arrangements made it difficult for the firefighters to access the blaze quickly. Despite their efforts, the fire continued to rage throughout the night, leaving traders and onlookers watching helplessly as their goods went up in smoke.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as traders rushed to salvage what they could from the burning stalls. “It happened so fast, people were shouting, trying to save their goods. But the fire spread so quickly,” said one local vendor.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, with fire officers stating that the investigation is ongoing. However, it is believed that the rapid spread of the flames could be attributed to the wooden structures and the high volume of flammable goods in the market.
Mallam Atta Market, known for its bustling activity and narrow walkways, posed significant challenges for emergency responders. Access to the site was limited, and the crowded market area slowed down the fire crews’ ability to contain the blaze quickly.
