Midwife arrested over alleged GH₵55,000 child trafficking at Osu Hospital

A midwife at the Trust Mother and Child Hospital in Osu has been arrested over her alleged involvement in a child trafficking operation, police have said.

Lucinda Naomi Otchere, who heads the hospital’s maternity and labour ward, was arrested on 13th May 2026 as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged trafficking of children.

Police say she received a missing seven-year-old girl from one of the suspects, Janet Larbie, and paid GH₵20,000 to facilitate the transfer.

Investigators also allege that Otchere later paid an additional GH₵35,000 and instructed Larbie to send another child, a five-year-old girl, to a couple in Pokuase.

Authorities believe the suspected trafficking network may have been operating for some time.

The arrest follows an earlier operation by the Central East Regional Police Command, which led to the arrest of six other suspects.

They are Grace Osei Effie, Regina Ejewa, Janet Larbie, Mary Doce, Yvonne Chumessy and Sekina Umar.

Police say investigations are continuing.
