Military officer killed in blast during counter-terrorism exercise in Upper East Region

A military officer has been killed in a blast during a counter-terrorism training exercise in Ghana’s Upper East Region, the Armed Forces has confirmed.

The Ghana Armed Forces said the incident happened during Exercise Storm Shield, a ten-day operation designed to strengthen troops’ capacity to respond to terrorism and violent extremism.

The officer, identified as Private Adotey of the 6 Infantry Battalion, died in an explosion at Binduri in the Upper East Region while taking part in the exercise.

According to details shared at the closing ceremony, held at the 11 Mechanised Battalion in Bazua, Private Adotey was attempting to rescue fellow personnel at the scene when the blast occurred.

The announcement was made by the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, during the formal conclusion of the exercise.

Exercise Storm Shield was conducted across several locations, including Bawku, Pusiga, and Binduri, all in the Upper East Region. The training brought together troops to simulate responses to security threats and improve operational readiness.

The Ghana Armed Forces said the exercise had achieved its objective of enhancing preparedness, despite the fatal incident.
