Ministry of Sports Unveils Boxing IMC Today; Powers Slams Azumah’s inclusion

Former boxer and promoter Ayitey Powers has slammed the appointment of Ghana’s boxing legend and Hall of Famer, Azumah Nelson, to the Interim Management Committee (IMC) set to be inaugurated today, Monday, 29th September at 13:00 GMT.

Speaking on Original TV, Powers fumed that Azumah has “nothing to offer” Ghana boxing, stressing that while he enjoys global fame, he has done little to support or mentor emerging fighters.

“Being a champion is one thing, but helping the next generation is another. Azumah has done nothing for us,” Powers said.

His explosive remarks come in the wake of boxer Bahubali’s tragic death, which forced the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to suspend all boxing activities.

The IMC has been tasked with restoring order and credibility to the sport.

But Powers is unconvinced, warning that the committee’s mission will collapse if it leans on past icons like Azumah instead of embracing new, progressive voices.

The comments have ignited fierce debate within Ghana’s boxing circles, splitting opinions on whether the sport should be guided by legendary figures or fresh leadership.
