Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu, John Abdulai Jinapor, has expressed frustration over the no progress of the Pwalugu Multipurpose dam construction launched in 2019.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Jinapor threatened to summon the Finance Ministry to Parliament to explain how funds allocated to the project have been utilized.
Despite the payment of $12 million to contractors, Jinapor says some consultants have confirmed receiving additional payments, raising questions about the transparency and accountability of the project’s finances.
“The Minority has made it abundantly clear and when we resume parliament, we will file the processes in order to hall all these agencies, particularly the ministry of finance before parliament and we will ensure that we use whatever legitimate means to retrieve these monies,” he said
Meanwhile, the MP for Sissala East, Amidu Chinnia Issahaku, has also called for an investigation into the matter, emphasizing the need for clarity on how the allocated funds have been used.
“I will also agree that there is a need for a thorough investigation to establish what actually happened with these expenditures. We need to know, the possibilities are many, I don’t want to throw a guess as to what would have happened with the money…before the payment was done, there should have been a certificate, what was the basis for the certificate? Whatever the money was intended for, we need to know so that there can be value for money,” he said
The Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam project, which aims to provide hydroelectric power and irrigation for local communities, has been plagued by delays and funding issues.
The Minority in Parliament is now seeking answers from the Finance Ministry to ensure that the project is completed efficiently and effectively.
This development highlights the ongoing challenges in transparency and accountability in government projects.
