The Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana (MoMAG) has clarified that the alleged data breach affecting approximately 5,000 customers of the MTN Group does not impact MTN Mobile Money customers in Ghana.
In a statement signed by National President Kingsley Amoako-Atta, Director of Operations Stephen Quarcoo, and National Secretary Edward Ofori Agyemang, MoMAG assured the public that MTN Mobile Money Ghana’s platforms and systems remain secure.
“We want to assure the public that MTN Mobile Money Ghana’s platforms and systems have not been compromised, and customer funds remain secure,” the statement read.
MoMAG commended MTN for proactively contacting affected customers and advised the public to remain calm and rely on official communication for accurate information.
The group emphasized that MTN Mobile Money Ghana is subject to rigorous security standards and monitoring by the Bank of Ghana (BoG), and if the system had been affected, the BoG would have halted the service.
“If the system had been affected by breach, the BoG would have halted the service by now,” the statement noted.
MoMAG also warned customers to be cautious of suspicious calls or messages from strangers claiming to be MTN staff, emphasizing that MTN will only contact customers through their official number, 0244300000.
“Customers should avoid engaging with anyone claiming to be MTN staff who contacts them through other means,” the statement cautioned. Customers are advised to verify the authenticity of any communication purporting to be from MTN and contact MTN’s customer service directly if they have any concerns or questions.
