More than 1,000 students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi have undergone orientation under the Government of Ghana’s One Million Coders Programme, a flagship initiative aimed at equipping young people with digital and coding skills for the modern economy.
The orientation marked the beginning of training for the students, who will receive practical instruction in coding and other digital technologies to improve their employment prospects, support entrepreneurship and prepare them for opportunities in the growing digital economy.
Addressing participants, the KNUST Focal Lead for the programme and Principal Investigator at the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab, Professor Jerry John Kponyo, stressed the need for young people to develop relevant digital skills to remain competitive in a rapidly changing global job market.
He said the programme would help participants take advantage of emerging opportunities in technology and innovation while contributing to Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.
The One Million Coders Programme is a national initiative introduced by the Government of Ghana to train one million people in coding, software development and other digital skills. The programme seeks to bridge the country’s digital skills gap, create pathways to employment and entrepreneurship, and position Ghana to compete effectively in the global digital economy.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to build a digitally skilled workforce capable of supporting innovation, economic growth and technological advancement across the country.
