The Movement for Change (MFC) has welcomed the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, saying the process adheres to the constitutional framework outlined in Article 146.
“The President’s action, taken on the advice of the Council of State and following a prima facie determination, adheres to the procedural framework outlined in Article 146,” Movement for Change said in a statement signed by Solomon Owusu.
The MFC, however, called for transparency in the removal process of state officials, urging the Constitutional Review Committee to consider making the process more transparent.
“We would have wished for a more transparent process for every Ghanaian to be carried along in these times,” the statement read.
“This transparency is not however guaranteed by the 1992 constitution, and it is on this basis that we call on the Constitutional Review Committee to consider seriously as part of its work how the process of removing State Officials from office would be made more transparent.”
The movement also advised political parties to refrain from politicizing the matter, allowing the laws of the land to work.
The MFC further criticized the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) for calling for the suspension of the Chief Justice’s suspension, saying their stance must be grounded in law.
“We would have agreed with them if their call was grounded in law quoting relevant provisions of the constitution to buttress their case,” the statement said.
The movement reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the constitutional processes unfold with integrity.
“Let us rise above partisan divides and work together to strengthen our democracy, ensuring that the judiciary remains a beacon of hope and justice for all,” the statement concluded.
