Two Members of Parliament have expressed concern over the recurring flooding that continues to affect communities across Ghana, warning that the growing problem is costing lives, destroying property and disrupting livelihoods.
The Second Deputy Minority Whip and Member of Parliament for Weija Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, together with the Member of Parliament for Effia Constituency, Isaac Yaw Boamah Nyarko, raised the issue in a statement on the floor of Parliament.
The lawmakers said floods were becoming more frequent and severe in many parts of the country, leading to significant human and economic losses.
They stressed the need for sustainable and long term solutions to address the challenge, arguing that flood management efforts have largely been limited to seasonal emergency responses that have failed to tackle the root causes of the problem.
The MPs called on both the government and Parliament to strengthen oversight and ensure the effective implementation of policies aimed at reducing the impact of future floods.
They also emphasized the need for improved urban planning and stricter enforcement of building regulations. According to them, future developments must take environmental protection measures into account and include proper drainage systems to help reduce the risk of flooding.
The legislators said a coordinated and proactive approach was needed to protect lives, property and economic activities from the recurring threat of floods across the country.
