MPs question $80m Dansoman sea defense project over poor progress

Members of Parliament on the Works and Housing Committee have raised serious concerns about the quality and pace of work on the Dansoman sea defense project, describing the progress as disappointing and not reflective of the project’s cost.

During an inspection visit this morning, the committee, led by its chairman Vincent Asamoah Oppong, said the work done so far does not match the nearly 80 million dollar contract value. He said the project, which is meant to protect the coastline from tidal waves, appeared far behind schedule and of questionable quality.

Mr. Oppong noted that the local contractor handling the project lacked the experience required for a development of such magnitude, which may have contributed to the slow and substandard progress.

Supporting his remarks, ranking member Martin Kwaku Adjei-Mensah Korsah and other committee members said the level of work seen on site does not justify the scale of investment made. They called for an audit to ensure accountability and value for money.

The committee also urged the contractor to improve its capacity and demonstrate stronger commitment to completing the project on time, stressing the importance of protecting communities along the shoreline from worsening coastal erosion.
