MPs switching constituencies unnecessarily cringes me – Kwesi Pratt

Celebrated Journalist, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., says he finds the attitude of some Members of Parliament who switch constituency while hanging on to the old one worrying.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on 29th March 2023, Kwesi Pratt indicated that MPs must take cognizance of the commitment they make to serve their constituents, adding that it is a commitment that should not be undermined.

“There is a huge problem about it. If you are representing a people, it has to be a certain level of commitment, to the people, to the area. So, this thing about every now and then changing constituencies as if we were changing shoes or changing spectacles and so on…it is worrying. If you are committed to a constituency, what is it that moves you to another constituency,” he quizzed.

He also suggested that MPs who switch constituencies based on personal convenience must have a second thoughts.

“Most of the time, it does appear that personal convenience plays a huge role in this switch from one constituency to the other. And if it is about personal convenience rather than a commitment to constituents who have elected you, then there is a problem.”

He intimated that such display by MPs should not be encouraged as it does not show sufficient commitment to the people who elected them into Parliament.

Kwesi Pratt was reacting to the Member of Parliament for Domeabra-Obom Constituency, Sophia Karen Edem Ackuaku’s refusal to file her nomination and the influx of her posters in town indicating she intends to contest for the Ayawaso Central Constituency seat.

The veteran member of the Fourth estate of the Realm said Madam Karen Edem Ackuaku’s behavior is a disservice to the people she has pledged to serve.

He, however, suggested that MPs who are found doing that are not setting the right precedent for others to follow.
