The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Environment Minister, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who died in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
Afenyo-Markin described Dr. Murtala Mohammed as a passionate advocate for environmental protection who “possessed that rare quality of listening with intent to understand.”
He noted that despite their political differences, they shared moments of genuine discourse about Ghana’s future.
“Hon Dr. Alhaji Murtala Mohammed and I may have sat across the parliamentary aisle, but we shared countless moments of genuine discourse about Ghana’s future,” Afenyo-Markin said.
He praised Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed’s commitment to his work, saying his legacy should inspire Ghanaians to work towards protecting the environment and building a prosperous nation.
“Let us honour these eight souls by… protecting Ghana’s environment,” he added.
Afenyo-Markin prayed that Murtala Mohammed’s soul rests in perfect peace and that his memory remains an everlasting beacon guiding Ghanaians towards a more united and prosperous future.
Minority Leader pays tribute to victims of military helicopter crash
Eight persons including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, NDC former Parliamentary Candidate Samuel Aboagye, NDC National First Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, and three valiant military personnel Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah were killed in a helicopter accident at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, en route to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme.
The helicopter, a GAF Z9 utility helicopter, took off from Accra at 9:12 am but lost contact with radar shortly after departure.
Afenyo-Markin described the loss as “a profound human loss that touches the very soul of our Nation.”
