Museums to offer free access nationwide on International Museum Day

The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board has announced free access to national museums across the country as part of activities marking International Museum Day on May 18, 2026.

In a statement issued ahead of the celebration, the Board said the initiative forms part of efforts to promote cultural education, national unity, and public engagement with Ghana’s heritage.

This year’s celebration is under the theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World.”

According to the Board, museums continue to play a vital role in preserving humanity’s shared history and fostering social cohesion at a time when divisions across societies are becoming more pronounced.

“The theme underscores the evolving role of museums as custodians of humanity’s collective memory,” the statement noted, adding that museums “safeguard not only artefacts, but also the values, identities, and histories that shape societies.”

As part of the nationwide commemoration, the Board said the public will enjoy “free access to national museums, exhibitions, guided tours, and public dialogues” on May 18.

The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board indicated that museums are increasingly being reimagined as “inclusive and accessible spaces that engage communities and promote national unity.”

The Board also reaffirmed its commitment to using museums as tools for education, dialogue, and development.

“At a time when divisions, social, cultural, and political, are increasingly evident across the world, museums remain uniquely positioned to foster understanding, encourage dialogue, and celebrate shared heritage,” the statement added.
