Gyakie has revealed that she never originally planned to become a musician, saying her path into the industry was shaped by her mother’s influence and her early exposure to music at home.
Speaking in an interview on 3FM, the Ghanaian singer reflected on her childhood and explained that her first experience with performing came through her mother, who often encouraged her to sing for guests at home.
“I never imagined I would pursue music as a profession while growing up. My mum used to make me perform at home, even when I didn’t want to. Whenever she had guests over, she would call me to sing. I would pick up a bottle or a lotion as a microphone and perform in front of them. It used to annoy me a bit, but she clearly saw something I didn’t at the time,” she said.
Gyakie also credited her upbringing in a musically rich environment for helping shape her love for the art. As the daughter of highlife musician Nana Acheampong, she grew up around rehearsals, studio sessions, and visiting artistes, experiences that gradually strengthened her connection to music.
“Growing up around music made all of us love it. I watched my dad rehearse at home and in the studio, and I saw artistes coming in and out. Even though I was very young, I could tell something special was happening,” she added.
Although music did not immediately seem like a career option, her involvement in entertainment activities during her school days hinted at the path she would eventually take.
According to Gyakie, everything changed after the release of her debut song, when the positive response from listeners encouraged her to take music more seriously.
“The feedback I received made me sit up. People kept saying my voice was unique and the song was good. It felt like they were pointing me towards something important. That’s when I realised I had to take it seriously, and now it has become a business,” she said.
Her journey shows how unexpected talent, when nurtured in the right environment, can grow into a successful career.
