General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, has described his overwhelming re-election to the position as “unprecedented, historic and humbling”.
Rev. Wengam secured almost 90% of the votes at the church’s 32nd Ghana General Council meeting held in August 2026, significantly improving on the 61% he obtained when he was first elected four years ago.
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Friday, September 25, Rev. Wengam said he expected to retain his position but was surprised by the scale of the victory.
“I knew I was going to win, but not that… Such a scale or magnitude or margin,” he said.
According to him, the result represented a vote on his performance during his first four-year tenure.
“And the people, indeed, it was a vote on my work for the past four years. We’ve worked very hard,” he said.
Rev. Wengam, who is the seventh General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church, said his first election four years ago was also significant because he became the first leader of the church to win the position with 61% of the vote.
He said the latest result had now set another record, with no previous General Superintendent securing a margin approaching 90%.
“Four years ago, when I was elected first, I got 61%. Strangely, it was a story because that was the first time. And I’m the seventh general superintendent. The first time a general superintendent won by 61%. And again, the first time any leader won by almost 90%,” he said.
“So it’s unprecedented, it’s historic, it’s humbling.”
Six-point agenda for second term
Rev. Wengam attributed his re-election to the work carried out under his Christian Transformation Agenda, which he said is anchored on Micah 4:1-2.
He outlined the agenda around six areas: “reach, restore, rebuild, reposition, rebrand, and reform.”
The “reach” component, he explained, focuses on expanding the church through evangelism and church planting while strengthening discipleship among members.
He said the “restore” agenda seeks to revive the Pentecostal foundations of the Assemblies of God Church, particularly prayer, holiness and the spiritual revival associated with the church’s origins.
Under “rebuild”, Rev. Wengam said attention has been given to the welfare of pastors, retired ministers and pastors’ widows, as well as infrastructure development.
He said 177 temples had been constructed in rural communities during his first term, with several individuals and groups supporting the initiative.
Rev. Wengam said the next phase of his leadership would also involve a review of the church’s administrative structures and policies as it prepares to mark 100 years in Ghana.
“We can’t continue to do things the way we’ve done 95 years,” he said.
“So we are saying that between now and our 100 years and 5 years time, we are putting together a committee to really look at our structure, administrative structure.”
He said the church would also examine its policies and operations and identify areas requiring changes.
“We want to really look at our policies, our operations, and where we need to make amends,” he added.
Assemblies of God growth
Rev. Wengam also pointed to growth in the church during his first term, saying the Assemblies of God had established about 2,077 churches globally over the past four years.
“In the past 4 years, we’ve seen 40% growth. We’ve been able to establish about 2,077 churches,” he said.
He said the Assemblies of God currently has more than 88 million members globally, with hundreds of thousands of pastors and more than 450,000 local churches.
The church, he noted, will host the World Assemblies of God Congress in Ghana from October 14 to 16, 2026, an event he described as the first time the global congress will be held in Africa.
Rev. Wengam said the congress would bring together church leaders and participants from more than 100 countries.
The evening sessions will be held at the Accra Sports Stadium, while the morning conference for pastors, church leaders and potential leaders will take place at Independence Square.
The re-elected General Superintendent said the event would also provide an opportunity for the Assemblies of God Church to advance its global evangelisation agenda and discuss strategies for reaching communities where there are no churches.
