NADMO demolishes illegal structures along Kpeshie Lagoon to prevent flooding

The National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO, has begun demolishing unauthorized structures along the Tse Addo section of the Kpeshie Lagoon in an effort to reduce the risk of flooding in the area.

The exercise is being led by the Director General of NADMO, Major (Rtd.) Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, who said the action forms part of preventive measures aimed at safeguarding lives and property ahead of the rainy season.

According to NADMO, buildings and other developments erected within the lagoon corridor obstruct the natural flow of water, increasing the likelihood of severe flooding during heavy rains. The demolition is therefore intended to restore the lagoon to its original state and allow free movement of water.

Dr. Kuyon explained that repeated flooding in parts of Accra has often been linked to human activities, including the encroachment on waterways and wetlands. He stressed that the operation is not meant to punish residents but to prevent avoidable disasters.

Officials from NADMO said affected occupants had been warned in advance and engaged through community sensitisation efforts before the demolition began.

The organisation has urged the public to stop building on waterways and to cooperate with authorities to help reduce the impact of floods across the country.
