Nana Asantewaa Aboagyewaa, Queen Mother of Akyem Apedwa, Dies at 68

The Akyem Apedwa community and the entire Akyem Abuakwa state are in deep mourning following the passing of Nana Asantewaa Aboagyewaa, the revered Queen Mother of Akyem Apedwa.

Nana Asantewaa, who led with dignity, grace, and wisdom for over 30 years, passed away at the age of 68. She was known for her unwavering commitment to the welfare of her people and her significant role in the cultural and social development of the region.

Her death was announced during a solemn ritual at the forecourt of the Apedwa Palace, where it was officially declared that the “Mother of the Land has visited her ancestors.” The emotional ceremony brought together community members, chiefs, and traditional leaders, all paying tribute to a woman whose leadership has shaped the destiny of Akyem Apedwa for decades.

Nana Asantewaa ascended to the esteemed position of Queen Mother over 30 years ago and held the title with honor.

She was widely respected not only for her leadership but also for her contributions to the preservation of the rich cultural heritage of the Akyem Abuakwa people. Her efforts in promoting education, supporting women’s empowerment, and advancing the socio-economic development of the region have left a lasting legacy.

In the wake of her passing, preparations are underway for the 40-day memorial ceremony, which will take place at Apedwa on Saturday, 13th June 2026. This period of mourning will provide the community with the opportunity to honor her life and reflect on the many contributions she made to the region.
