A state funeral will be held on Friday, 28 November 2025 at Independence Square in Accra, honouring the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman‑Rawlings, who passed away on Thursday, 23 October 2025 in Accra at the age of 76.
President John Dramani Mahama announced the ceremony to recognise Mrs Agyeman-Rawlings’ invaluable contributions to advancing women’s and children’s rights as well as national development.
Mrs Agyeman-Rawlings had served as First Lady of Ghana from June 1979 and again from December 1981 until January 2001, making her the country’s longest-serving First Lady.
During her time in public life, she founded the 31 December Women’s Movement, pushed for legal reforms such as the Intestate Succession Law, and became the first woman to run for the presidency of Ghana in 2016.
Her death and imminent state funeral mark a moment of national reflection on her legacy as an advocate for gender equality and social change.
