National Chief Imam condemns Bawku violence, urges peaceful resolution

The National Chief Imam, Shaikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has expressed deep concern over the recent violence in Bawku, including an arson attack on a police station and the killing of peacekeeping personnel.

In a press statement, His Eminence condemned the brazen shooting at the Inspector General of Police’s vehicle, describing it as “disgusting impunity” and “an assault on the authority of the state.”

“Decent democratic politics is a virtue,”he stated. “But when a matter of national security implications is subjected to needless partisan politicization, it can easily become a tribute to violence entrepreneurs.”

The Grand Imam appealed to factions in the Bawku chieftaincy conflict to “silence the guns and allow the restoration of normalcy” to the area.

He commended President John Dramani Mahama-led administration’s decision to refer the dispute to His Majesty Asantehene Osei Tutu II for mediation and offered his support for behind-the-scenes diplomacy.

Dr. Sharubutu also urged the media to maintain ethical standards in their reportage, emphasizing the need for peace-loving, reconciliatory, and unifying analyses.

“Jaundiced analyses that have the potential to inflame passions should be avoided,” he advised.

The National Chief Imam has instructed Imams across Ghana to dedicate portions of their Friday sermons to prayers for peace in Bawku.
