National Security Ministry defends GH¢6m monthly budget for Bawku conflict

The Ministry of National Security has responded to criticisms over its GH¢6 million monthly budget to address the Bawku conflict, saying the allocation is necessary to maintain peace and stability in the area.

In a press statement provided to Metro TV, the Ministry emphasized its responsibility in designing and coordinating security operations nationwide, particularly in crisis zones like Bawku.

“The Ministry, as a matter of urgency, established a special operation in February 2023 to maintain peace in Bawku and its environs… A budget allocation of GH¢6,000,000 per month was made to support these operations,” excerpts of the statement read.

The funds cover operational costs, including fuel supplies, food rations, intelligence operations, and civil-military activities aimed at building societal cohesion.

Additionally, the Ministry expressed disappointment in Mahama Ayariga’s politicization of the issue.

“Such statements have the potential to disinform and misinform the citizens of Bawku, reignite tensions, and endanger the lives of personnel involved in the operations,” the National Security Ministry stated.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining operations in Bawku to ensure overall peace and stability in Ghana.
