The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared that Alhaji Umar Sanda has automatically forfeited his membership of the party after opting to contest as an independent candidate in the upcoming Ayawaso East Constituency by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.
In a letter dated February 17, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party said Mr. Sanda’s decision was “in direct contravention of the Party’s Constitution and the collective decision of the Party to field a duly and democratically elected candidate.”
“The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken note of your decision to contest as an independent candidate… This action is in direct contravention of the Party’s Constitution,” the statement said.
According to the party, by choosing to “break ranks” and challenge the officially endorsed candidate, Mr. Sanda had automatically lost his status as a member.
“By virtue of your decision to break ranks with the Party and contest against the officially endorsed candidate of the NDC, you have… automatically forfeited your membership of the Party with immediate effect,” the letter stressed.
The party further warned Mr. Sanda against associating himself with its identity in any form during his campaign.
“You are hereby formally notified that you are prohibited from using the Party’s name, logo, colors, insignia, symbols, or any other intellectual property or paraphernalia associated with the Party,” the statement added.
The letter, addressed to Mr. Sanda at his Accra-North address, concluded with a call for him to “be guided accordingly.”
The development comes ahead of the highly anticipated March 3 Ayawaso by-election, which is expected to draw keen political interest across the capital and the rest of Ghana.
