NDC marks 5th anniversary of Rawlings’ death; pledges to uphold his legacy

The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has paid glowing tribute to the memory of its founder, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, on the fifth anniversary of his passing.

The party’s Director of Communications, Kakra Essamuah, in a statement available to Metro TV, described Rawlings as a towering figure whose “sterling contributions to the development and welfare of our people” continue to inspire generations.

“Today, 12th November, 2025, is exactly 5 years since the passage into glory of the founding President of the 4th Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings,” the statement said.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Rawlings’ legacy, noting that “absolutely nothing will erase his legacy from the history of Ghana.”

The NDC also expressed sorrow over the recent passing of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, acknowledging her “memorable contributions to the nation” and stressing that she “is yet to receive the full honours of a befitting farewell as an indelible mark of the gratitude of the people of Ghana.

The statement said the last five years have been a period of reflection and grief for the party.

“In the long sweep of history, 5 years may appear short, but for us in the NDC, it has been 5 long years of mourning and sorrow. We shall always remember him,” it noted.

Jerry John Rawlings, Ghana’s longest-serving head of state, led the country first as a military leader from 1979 and later as a democratically elected president from 1993 to 2001. He died on November 12, 2020.
