NDC Professionals Forum calls for dismissal of chief fire officer over Kantamanto Market fire

The NDC Professionals Forum has condemned the Ghana Fire Service’s handling of the recent fire outbreak at the Kantamanto Second Hand Market, describing it as “gross incompetence.”

Pro-Forum in a statement expressed outrage and deep concern over the Fire Service’s failure to effectively respond to the emergency, resulting in the destruction of properties and livelihoods.

“The market’s central location makes it a high-risk area, and it is unacceptable that the Ghana Fire Service was not better prepared to respond to this emergency,” the statement read.

The Forum attributed the failure to the “ineptitude and lack of leadership” within the Ghana Fire Service, citing the Service’s inability to learn from repeated fire outbreaks in markets across the country.

“This unacceptable failure demands accountability, and we are calling for the immediate dismissal of the Chief Fire Officer,” the statement emphasized.

The NDC Professionals Forum also demanded that the government takes immediate action to address the issue, ensure accountability, and provide support and compensation to the victims of the fire outbreak.

They called on the Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Julius A. Kuunuor to take responsibility for the service’s poor handling of the disaster and step down or the government should show him the exit door.

“The Chief Fire Officer must take responsibility for this failure and resign or be dismissed with immediate effect,” the Forum’s National President, Amb. Sam Pee Yalley, said.

The Forum further called on the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to develop a comprehensive plan to prevent future occurrences, stressing the need for urgent action to address the issue.
