The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has once again firmly rejected suggestions that President John Dramani Mahama is seeking a third term in office, reaffirming its commitment to Ghana’s Constitution and democratic values.
Speaking on Channel One TV, the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, stressed that the party would not support any attempt to amend the Constitution to extend presidential tenure, regardless of its strength in Parliament.
Kwetey described Ghana as a leading model of democratic transition in sub-Saharan Africa, noting that the country’s strict adherence to constitutional term limits has earned it international respect.
“First and foremost, you must appreciate that all over sub-Saharan Africa, if there is one country that has been able to provide the model that continues to be an inspiration in terms of democratic transition, it is Ghana,” he said.
According to him, protecting this democratic legacy remains a priority for the NDC.
The NDC General Secretary emphasised that the party would never encourage actions that undermine constitutional provisions, adding that President Mahama himself had clearly rejected any discussion about a third-term agenda.
“We at no point should ever encourage a situation where there is a disruption in our constitutional stipulations. The president has spoken about that and clearly he did well because he didn’t want to allow such conversations to continue as if he is entertaining it,” Kwetey stated.
