The inauguration of the 9th Parliament, scheduled to take place today, has been thrown into uncertainty following a legal application by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to halt the swearing-in of MPs-elect in Techiman South, Okaikwei Central, and Tema Central constituencies.
The NDC’s application, filed at the Supreme Court, seeks to prevent the MPs-elect Patrick Boamah, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah and Charles Forson from taking office due to unresolved disputes over the validity of their election results.
The party claims that the electoral processes in these constituencies were marred by irregularities, which compromised the fairness and transparency of the elections.
According to sources within Parliament, the leadership is reviewing the legal documentation and consulting with relevant stakeholders to determine the next course of action.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has already stated that the MPs-elect in the affected constituencies are not eligible to be sworn in due to the Supreme Court’s ruling quashing the re-collation of votes in these areas.
The development has been greeted by mixed reactions from political analysts and civil society organizations. While some see the legal challenge as a necessary step to ensure electoral accountability, others warn that it could lead to further polarization.
The fate of the MPs-elect in Techiman South, Okaikwei Central, and Tema Central now hangs in the balance, as the court is expected to hear arguments and make a decision in the coming days.
Despite the NDC’s court injunction to stop the swearing-in of the three MPs-elect from Techiman South, Okaikwei Central, and Tema Central, Metro TV has spotted the three MPs-elect in the parliamentary chamber, indicating that they are waiting to be sworn in.
Meanwhile, the Koforidua High Court has upheld an injunction restraining the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate, Ernest Kumi, from holding himself out as the Member of Parliament-elect for Akwatia Constituency.
