Built environment experts have issued a strong caution to first-time homeowners to prioritise professionalism and due diligence when undertaking construction projects, warning that negligence could lead to costly and dangerous consequences.
Speaking on the Homeowners Show on Metro TV on Saturday, April 11, 2026, Raymond Dornyoh Esq./QS and Charles Amissah-Koomson, both members of the Architecture Alliance, dissected the topic “Professional Negligence: Understanding Duty of Care as a Construction Professional.”
The experts underscored that many structural defects, building collapses, and financial losses in Ghana’s housing sector can be traced back to the failure of professionals to uphold their duty of care.

According to Mr. Dornyoh, engaging qualified professionals, from architects to quantity surveyors and engineers is not optional but essential. He stressed that cutting corners to save costs often leads to far greater expenses in the long run.
“Homeowners must demand accountability and ensure that every stage of their project is handled by certified professionals,” he noted.
Mr. Amissah-Koomson added that beyond hiring professionals, first time homeowners must also take an active interest in their projects by verifying permits, monitoring work progress, and insisting on adherence to approved building plans.
The duo further called on inspectorate departments within Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to intensify routine site inspections across the country.
They argued that consistent monitoring would not only enforce compliance with building regulations but also prevent unsafe practices before they escalate into disasters.
“Regulatory bodies must not wait for complaints. Regular site visits can save lives and protect investments,” Mr. Amissah-Koomson emphasized.
