Swedish coach Kim Lars Björkegren has been appointed the new head coach of Ghana’s senior women’s football team, the Black Queens, succeeding Nora Hauptle, whose contract expired in December 2024.
Björkegren, a former player whose career was cut short by injury, brings 18 years of coaching experience across Sweden, Cyprus, China, and the U.S.
He has achieved notable success, including domestic titles with Apollon Ladies and Linköping FC, and was named Cyprus’ Coach of the Year in 2021.
With experience coaching in various leagues and roles, including as a scout and analyst for Finland’s women’s national team, Björkegren is known for his possession-based, attacking style, emphasizing discipline, teamwork, and adaptability.
Joining him on the coaching staff are Charles Sampson and Anita Wiredu as assistants, while Nassamu Yakubu will serve as the Goalkeepers Coach, and Enoch Jordan Daitey will take on the role of Athletic Coach.
The team’s medical unit will be led by Kate Boachie-Agyemang, supported by Nurse Asinawu Abubakari, and Physiotherapist Margaret Foli.
Drucilia Arthur will manage the team’s welfare, with Patience Nana A. Quarshie and Adwoa Bayor handling equipment duties. Ronnie Bergdahl, an experienced video analyst, will provide technical support.
The new technical team has been entrusted by the Ghana Football Association to guide the Black Queens to success in upcoming international competitions, with the upcoming Women’s AFCON top on the list.
