New RFID number plates to improve vehicle tracking and safety – DVLA CEO

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority will roll out a new number plate system in 2026 that comes with advanced security features and digital integration.

The plates, which will include embedded RFID technology, are designed to modernize vehicle management, improve law enforcement efficiency, and enhance road safety.

DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey said the upgrade is a major step toward creating a secure and transparent vehicle registration system.

“These changes are aimed at creating a more secure, transparent, and effective vehicle management system that benefits both vehicle owners and the public,” Kotey said.

Key features of the new plates include:

  • Enhanced security: The plates will be linked to a central database, making it nearly impossible to register vehicles that evade import duties or are smuggled.
  • Improved law enforcement: RFID chips will allow authorities to instantly access vehicle information, making it easier to track cars involved in crimes.
  • Contactless toll payments: The technology will integrate with future toll systems for automated payments, helping to reduce congestion at toll booths.
  • Regional identifiers: Plates will display a regional name and area code instead of the registration year for quick identification.
  • Modern design and durability: Reflective materials will improve visibility in poor weather or at night, enhancing safety.

The DVLA says the new plates will also reduce human error and curb fraudulent activities by fully linking registration processes to its digital database.

The design and security features may undergo further adjustments before the system is officially introduced.
