Newly sworn-in Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie pledges an independent, accountable Judiciary

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has been officially sworn in as Ghana’s Chief Justice, pledging to uphold judicial independence, transparency, and accountability as central pillars of his leadership.

The investiture ceremony, attended by government officials, members of the judiciary, parliamentarians, and representatives of the legal profession, marked a historic moment in the country’s judicial history.

In his address, Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for his appointment, the Council of State for their counsel, and Parliament for endorsing his nomination.

He also acknowledged the support of his family, mentors, and colleagues who have contributed to his professional journey.
Speaking on the judiciary’s role, Baffoe-Bonnie emphasized that courts must serve the people impartially and resist any political or external interference.

“Our judiciary must be independent, impartial, and accessible. It must not serve the powerful at the expense of the vulnerable,” he said.

The Chief Justice committed to reforming judicial processes, clearing case backlogs, promoting alternative dispute resolution, and modernizing court systems through technology to ensure that justice is timely, affordable, and within reach for all Ghanaians.

He also pledged to strengthen ethical standards within the judiciary, ensuring judges and court staff act with integrity while treating every litigant with dignity.

“Every litigant who enters a courtroom brings not only a case but hope,” he said.

Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie concluded by calling on all stakeholders—including lawyers, civil society, and the public—to support efforts to build a judiciary worthy of national confidence, a system that is independent yet accountable, and fair yet accessible.
