Dr. Elvis Botah has backed National Democratic Congress (NDC) General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey’s concerns about attempts to shield corruption suspects from prosecution, describing his remarks as frustration anchored on “a Pandora’s box.”
Mr. Kwetey recently urged Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, to remain firm in prosecuting alleged corruption cases. According to him, there are signs that some individuals are attempting to strike deals or exert pressure to protect suspects.
“We at the party level are picking up signals that some people among us are trying to cut deals with people who are supposed to be prosecuted,” Mr. Kwetey said. “Some are becoming conduits through whom pressure is being brought to bear on people who are supposed to do what is right.”
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana with Moro Awudu, Dr. Botah said the Attorney General’s approach of public commentary without swift legal follow-through was troubling.
“Because of the sensitivity of criminal prosecution in our system, it requires tact,” he said. “Coming to the media to make claims and nine months down the line we do not see anyone presented in court is a worrying trend.”
Dr. Botah noted that problems were also surfacing from the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL), adding that Kwetey’s concerns were justified. “Kudos to Mr. Fifi Kwetey for his principled stance. If government is able to take on its own when necessary, we can be sure of sanity in our democracy,” he said.
On the same programme, Ketu North MP Eric Edem Agbana dismissed suggestions of a rift between the NDC party and government.
“Mr. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey is speaking from experience,” he said. “The party and the government are working very well together. We can always improve, but there is no disconnect.”
