President John Dramani Mahama has pardoned Sammy Gyamfi, the acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, following a public uproar over a video showing him handing a sum of U.S. dollars to controversial evangelist Nana Agradaa.
The footage, which went viral across social media platforms, sparked nationwide concern over a potential breach of Ghana’s Foreign Exchange Act and possible violations of the Code of Conduct for public officials.
Civil society groups and opposition members were quick to call for Gyamfi’s dismissal, citing serious concerns about transparency, accountability, and ethical governance.
In a press briefing held on Tuesday, Minister of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu conveyed the President’s decision, emphasising that while the President considers the incident regrettable, Gyamfi’s public apology has been accepted and no further disciplinary action will be taken.
“The President believes in upholding ethical standards in public service, but also recognizes the importance of proportionality in response,” Ofosu said.
“Mr. Gyamfi has been sternly warned, and all appointees are reminded to conduct themselves in ways that sustain public trust.”
