A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has warned that the party is being pushed towards “total destruction” due to indiscipline, dishonesty and what he describes as open vote buying within its internal processes.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Afternoon Ghana on Thursday, January 15, 2026, Dr Tamakloe said the situation within the party has deteriorated significantly, particularly under the leadership of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
“We are very much concerned about the indiscipline of the party. Indiscipline. Dishonesty. Dishonesty which has brought corruption into the party,” he said.
According to him, corruption has become entrenched in the party’s internal elections, making it nearly impossible for young members without money to compete for leadership positions.
“If you don’t have money to buy the position, then you are nobody,” he stated, adding that this practice is not speculation but a known fact.
“I am saying it for a fact. It has happened and it is still happening. We saw it on the television. Money is being distributed.”
Dr Nyaho Tamakloe also rejected claims that he is not a founding member of the NPP, describing such assertions as “ridiculous” and lacking factual basis.
“That, definitely, I would not like to comment on that because it’s a statement that, to me, doesn’t make sense,” he said, explaining that only four people signed the party’s registration documents, while others were recognised as founding members through official membership records.
He stressed that even if one did not sign the registration documents, it did not invalidate their status.
“Doesn’t mean that if they didn’t sign that particular document for a registration, they are not founding members of the party. They were even fathers of the party.”
Dr Tamakloe further dismissed claims that he had left the NPP following John Mahama’s election as President, challenging those making the allegation to provide proof.
“That statement that I said I’m not a member of the party anymore because John Mahama is the president, that is a fallacy. He should bring the tape out,” he said.
He defended former Environment Minister Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, who has recently been at the centre of controversy within the party, insisting he had every right to speak openly.
“Frimpong-Boateng has every right to speak the way he spoke. I personally support him,” Dr Tamakloe said.
“If they start Frimpong-Boateng, then they have to sack me.”
Describing Prof Frimpong-Boateng as “the pillar of the party”, Dr Nyaho Tamakloe criticised attempts to discipline him publicly instead of resolving issues internally.
“They should have called him for a discussion. That’s what a mature person would do.”
On the upcoming NPP presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, Dr Nyaho Tamakloe said he does not support any of the candidates, arguing that the party has ignored the proper process of rebuilding from the grassroots after its electoral defeat.
“They are doing the wrong thing. Eventually, it will lead the party into a very, very big problem,” he said.
However, he expressed confidence that the NPP could recover ahead of the 2028 elections if it corrects its course.
“If leadership is genuinely picked, if that particular individual is popular amongst the grassroots and is picked, and not through intimidation and just vote buying, definitely we can stand the NDC,” he said.
