The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reprimanded Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to unilaterally suspend three of its Members of Parliament, labeling the move as “selective” and “autocratic”.
In a statement released on February 3, 2025, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong expressed the party’s solidarity with the Minority caucus, stating that the Speaker’s actions are “very dangerous” and aimed at intimidating the Minority into submission.
“The Party sees this selective, and autocratic posture of the Speaker as very dangerous, with all these actions packaged to cow the Minority into submission, consequently weakening its potential to hold the government accountable,” the statement read.
The NPP has also rejected the Speaker’s decision, citing its disregard for the Constitution and the rules of natural justice.
The party has reaffirmed its support for its 88 MPs and pledged to stand with them against any form of repression or unfairness.
This development comes after chaotic scenes were witnessed during the vetting of ministerial nominees on January 30, 2025.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Parliamentary Monitoring Organizations Network (GPMON) has commended Speaker Alban Bagbin for taking disciplinary action against four Members of Parliament (MPs) who misconducted themselves during the vetting of ministerial nominees.
GPMON believes the Speaker’s prompt investigation and decision to hold those responsible accountable is a necessary step in upholding the dignity and integrity of Parliament.
