The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken disciplinary action against some of its members in the Yendi constituency, expelling or suspending them for engaging in anti-party behaviour.
According to a notice issued by Alhaji Baba Gaz ali, Chairman of the NPP in Yendi constituency, the affected members have “forfeited their membership or have been summarily suspended” due to adverse findings against them by the Constituency Executive Committee and the Disciplinary Committee.
The notice cited several reasons for the expulsion or suspension, including standing as an independent candidate against the officially elected parliamentary candidate of the party, joining or declaring support for another political party, and supporting an independent candidate in the just-ended December 7, 2024, election in Yendi constituency.
Furthermore, officials of the party who refused to work for the party in the just-ended presidential and parliamentary elections were also affected by the decision.
The NPP’s constitution was invoked to justify the disciplinary actions. Article 3, Clause 9(1) states that a member who stands as an independent candidate against the officially elected member of the party “automatically forfeits his or her membership of the party.”
Similarly, Article 3, Clause 7(1) allows for the suspension of a member pending an inquiry into their conduct, while Article 3, Clause 8(1) provides for the expulsion of a member on grounds of misconduct.
This development comes amidst reports of internal conflicts within the NPP in the Yendi constituency, with some members accusing the party’s leadership of imposing candidates and manipulating the electoral process.

Meanwhile, similar action has been taken in the Agona West Constituency. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expelled 280 members, including incumbent Member of Parliament Cynthia Morrison.
This decision was made unanimously at an Expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting held on December 15, 2024.A
Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, Constituency Chairman of Agona West, said in a statement that the expelled members have been banned indefinitely from holding themselves out as members of the party, holding any position in the party, attending or participating in any party meetings or activities, and using any party symbol or flag.
The decision follows several complaints received from other party members against the said persons for standing as independent candidates against the officially elected parliamentary candidate of the party, joining or declaring their support for another political party, supporting an independent candidate in the just-ended December 7, 2024, parliamentary election in Agona West constituency, and continuously demonstrating such character against the party in every election year.
